House training your pet

Karen Doyle offers tips to help toilet train your pet.

House training your pet can be a stressful time, but the good news is you have Mother Nature on your side.

Most animals are conditioned to never 'eliminate' in the place where they eat, sleep and live, so make sure your pet has a place to relieve himself that seems and smells familiar – the scent acts like a trigger.

“Have you noticed how dogs will often use the very same spot they’ve used before?” asks Dog Whisperer’s Cesar Milan.

“First thing every morning, bring your puppy outside to the same general area. It is important to remain consistent throughout the process so it can learn the correct habit.”

Once your puppy has successfully relieved itself outside, it’s important to reward the good behaviour. An edible treat can get the message across of a job well done.
