Doing our bit to protect our ocean's marine life...

The oceans around South Africa are home to a sixth of the world’s marine species. This makes our oceans hugely significant, not only as a source of seafood, but also as a source of income for many people. After joining the globe in celebrating World Oceans Day earlier this year, we support another global movement that highlights the importance of marine conservation on 21 November: World Fisheries Day

World Fisheries Day 2013

More than 80% of the world’s fisheries are at risk of overfishing. That is why Pick n Pay has endeavoured to be part of the solution. We’ve given ourselves until the end of 2015 to stock only sustainably sourced seafood – the first retailer in Africa to make such a commitment.

By sustainable, we mean seafood that originates from a fishery or farm that could continue to operate indefinitely without reducing the target species’, or any other species’, ability to maintain a viable population in the marine ecosystem.

Sustainable seafood should:

  • not be a species that’s regarded as endangered or threatened
  • be caught in a well-managed fishery by registered commercial fishers
  • be caught or farmed using responsible fishing or farming methods
  • be traceable from boat or farm to plate

By transforming our fresh, frozen and canned seafood operations by the end of 2015, we’ll be able to ensure only sustainable seafood products are sold. We will do this by making sure that all seafood products meet certain sustainable sourcing criteria, or we will not stock them.

That means products will either be certified by the Marine Stewardship Council for wild-caught products, or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council for farmed products. Or they could be categorised as green by WWF SA’s Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) or engaged in a credible, time-bound improvement project.

Pick n Pay’s overall goal is to increase the availability of sustainable seafood and promote responsible fishing practices. Look out for the WWF-SASSI cards available at our fish shop counters. These encourage our customers to buy sustainably, help them decide which products to purchase and raise awareness of the importance of protecting our seas.

Doing your bit to protect our ocean’s marine life is easy. Simply buy seafood in the following categories:

  • GREEN - anchovy, calamari, dorado, hake, mussels, oysters, sardines, South African snoek
  • ORANGE - farmed abalone, king mackerel, kingklip, prawns, harders

You can also use our recipe search to find dishes that use sustainable seafood. Or visit the SASSI website for more info.
