Be inspired by nature and dress up your home with winter treasures. Get the whole family outdoors to collect pods, twigs and other interesting bits and pieces from your garden, nearby park or forest. Not only will you have lots of fun, it's also a creative and inexpensive way to decorate your house or table.

Household tip type: Garden and outdoors

1. Fireside fantasy

Brighten up an unused fireplace with twigs and fairy lights.

2. Seating plan

Use pods, twigs or pine cones to display place names for your guests at dinner parties or make name tags to hang on children’s bedroom doors.

3. Pot luck

Protect your table with a pot stand made of twigs that have been cut to size. Tie them together by weaving through colourful ribbons to brighten up those grey winter days.

4. Branching out

Cut up a small log and drill holes in the middle to make an unusual candle holder.

5. Leaf it on

Place a beautiful autumn leaf underneath a block of cheese, or collect several leaves and use them as drinks coasters. Remember, fresh leaves can only be used once, as they do wilt.
