The moment has arrived. Make the most of it with these top tips!

  • It’s difficult to have breakfast at 4:30am, but try and eat something like toast, rusks or a banana, at least 1 hour before the start of the race.
  • Even though the sun may not be up by the time you get dressed, apply sunscreen to your face, arms and legs. Keep an extra sachet with you to reapply during the race. 
  • Arrive at your chute 30 minutes before your start time, and do some warm-up stretches while you wait.  
  • Start easy, giving your legs time to warm up. Don’t push yourself beyond what you’re capable of doing.
  • Keep to your left and ride a straight line at all times. Indicate to your fellow riders when you want to move off your line.
  • Make sure you drink enough, but don’t over-hydrate either. Drinking according to thirst is sufficient.
  • Start taking in some form of carbohydrates (energy drink, gels etc.) at about 1hr15 into the race and then every 45mintues-1hr after that,
  • And most importantly, have fun!
