Fighting cancer one mushroom at a time

20 August 2013

From 29 September to 26 October, the mushrooms on Pick n Pay shelves are turning pink again ‐ all in the name of breast cancer prevention.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Pick n Pay will be rolling out special pink mushroom punnets for the fourth consecutive year. This comes after a partnership with South African Mushroom Farmers' Association (SAMFA) in 2010 to raise awareness about mushrooms and breast cancer prevention as well as funds for breast cancer support. Since its launch, the campaign has raised over R1 million.

“Research has shown that women who eat an average of one mushroom per day (around 10g) have half the risk of breast cancer,” says SAMFA. This is thanks to the linoleic acid in mushrooms, which inhibits aromatase – an enzyme that affects oestrogen levels.

Breast Cancer Mushrooms

SAMFA reports that international studies “support the positive link between mushroom consumption and the reduction of breast cancer”. Mushrooms also contain disease-fighting antioxidants and selenium, both of which can help prevent a variety of cancers.

To join the fight against cancer, look out for the pink punnets at your local Pick n Pay. R1 from each punnet (250g whole or sliced white button mushrooms) will be donated to breast cancer support group Reach for Recovery.

Reach for Recovery is dedicated to helping women who’ve undergone a mastectomy return to their normal lifestyle as quickly and smoothly as possibleIt is a free service run by volunteers who have survived breast cancer.

With the range health benefits of mushrooms, we thought we'd share some easy recipes to help you incorporate them into your diet.
