Insomnia is a problem that affects many South Africans... How do you ensure a restful night's sleep?
The Health article, 'Rested interest' in the August issue of Fresh Living lists a number of proven methods to make nodding off at night easier.
Some of these are:
- Resisting naps during the day.
- Having dinner early and keeping it small and light.
- Sinking into a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles, and
- Keeping the same bed time and rising time to train your body to know when it should be resting.
Some other solutions are:
- Filling out a sleep diary if you can't figure out what is causing your insomnia. The diary will help you keep track of what time you go to bed, how long you spend in bed before falling asleep, if you wake up in the night, and how often, what time you get up in the morning, and how well you sleep. This could help you identify patterns and conditions that are affecting your sleep.
- Don't go to bed and then start worrying about things. Set aside specific time just for clearing your minid - a half hour after dinner in which you can write down what's bothering you and what you can do about it.
- Try and trick your brain by imagining that it's time to get up. Imagine your alarm has gone off and you have to get up and go to work. There's nothing quite so delicious as knowing you have to get up but falling asleep for a few minutes more... Try using this as a technique to fall asleep in the first place.
