The caramelised onions can be made in advance and kept refrigerated until needed.

Method
  • Mix all the ingredients for the patties until well combined
  • Shape mixture into 8 patties, cover and allow to firm in the fridge
  • Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan and fry the onions, over a low heat, until soft (about 10-15 minutes)
  • Add sugar and vinegar and stir until sugar has dissolved and mixture has thickened and caramelised, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
  • Heat a little oil in a large pan and fry the burgers, over medium heat, until browned and cooked to your liking
  • Place all the ingredients on a platter and allow guests to build their own burgers
