Chinese-style braised pork belly served with pak choi

The combination of classic Chinese five spice ‐ star anise, black pepper, fennel, cinnamon and cloves ‐ with tender pork belly makes this dish irresistibly delicious.

Method

  • Heat oven to 140°C.
  • Place pork into a shallow roasting tray.
  • Place soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, ginger, chilli, garlic, star anise, Chinese 5 spice, cinnamon and sherry into a bowl and mix together thoroughly.
  • Pour sauce over the pork and cover the roasting dish with foil.
  • Place pork in oven and cook for 2 – 2 ½ hours, or until pork is tender.
  • Take pork out of oven and turn temperature up to 220°.
  • Remove foil and return pork to the oven for about 20 minutes to allow sauce to reduce until slightly thickened. Take care not to burn.
  • Place a small pot of water onto stove and bring to the boil.
  • Place steamer on top of pot and steam Pak Choi for about 4-5 minutes or until just cooked.
  • Serve pork with the steamed Pak Choi and drizzle with a little sauce.
