PnP pharmacies carry a wide range of “Over the Counter” products (Schedule 0 to Schedule 2) which may be purchased for cash or on the “PAT” option (Pharmacist Initiated Therapy) of your medical aid. These products do not require a doctor’s prescription, but they are kept under the supervision of a pharmacist and pharmacist assistants, so that they can offer you advice regarding contra-indications and side effects. Always tell your pharmacist what medication you are taking every day, before just trying new “over the counter” medication for other ailments. These products may counteract each other or cause serious side effects due to being contra-indicated. The pharmacist or assistant can also give you advice as to what medication to keep in your medicine cabinets in cases of day to day ailments that may arise like stings, fever, cuts etc.
