6 conversation-starters to break the ice.

It’s an introvert’s nightmare: attending a party or event where you don’t know a soul. How to break the ice? We’ve got your back! Try one of the following effective conversation starters.Choose one or two that feel authentic for you – you might be nervous, but you can still be real.

1. “What’s been the highlight of your year?” This is perfect for end-of-year shindigs – personal, but not too personal.

2. “How do you know [insert name of host or common acquaintance]?” A sure-fire way to discover what else you have in common.

3. “Wow, I love your dress/shoes/earrings!” Of course it’s lame, but it should still work if you really mean it (authenticity, remember?).

4. “Hi, I don’t know too many people here, so I thought I’d introduce myself. I’m [name].” Honesty can be charming and disarming.

5. Try something humorous: “My mom said I shouldn’t talk to strangers, but you seem okay” or “Do you know any funny conversation starters? Haha. Get it?”

6. “So, what do you want to be when you grow up?” Anything that gets people to talk about their hopes and dreams is a winner.
